Are you the type of person who can go from 0 to 100 in a New York Minute? Have you ever been so riled up with anger or bitterness that you behaved in a manner that was out of character for you? I know that I have. Most people underestimate the negative fall out of harboring pro-longed toxic emotions, but anything that we feed eventually grows.
In a nutshell, toxic emotions are prolonged and persistent negative feelings that eat away at you mentally and emotionally; robbing you of your joy, peace of mind and your ability to enjoy everyday life and function well. And like a ticking time bomb, if toxic emotions are not managed effectively they can seep into the other areas of your life, causing you to: become unproductive on your job, take your stress and anger out on your kids or spouse, miss out on great opportunities and become the kind of person that even you don’t want to be around. And that’s when you’ll find yourself doing things that undermine your success and progress like: cursing out that annoying coworker or saying something incredibly hurtful to your spouse or binge eating to avoid dealing with yourself, or hitting that bottle of Hennessey as soon as you get home from work, or feeling chronically depressed for no apparent reason, or being irritable all the time to your kids, the dog and the cat.
The irony in all of this is that most of us don’t even realize when our emotions have taken us to a toxic place, until our anger goes from 0 to 100 or we’ve sunken so far into depression that we cannot pull ourselves out of it that easily or we’ve eaten ourselves into three or more dress sizes. This is why it’s critical to search your heart regularly through self-reflection, journaling, fasting, meditating on God’s word and prayer so that you can figure out how to do things differently.
Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think to develop a spirit of heaviness due to all of the negative emotions that you carry around throughout the day. What’s more is when you keep dwelling on a negative emotion, you rob yourself of this day that the Lord has made. And what happens over time is, this spirit of heaviness takes a toll on your personal wellbeing and self-esteem. Because there is absolutely no way that you can feel good about yourself and happy with your life if you are walking around angry, resentful or depressed most of the time. This is why it’s so important to take some well-deserved “me time” for yourself to detox from all of the emotions that are weighing on you so that you can travel through life without the extra emotional weight of excess baggage.
