Why
go on a Soul Fast for 40 days? What’s the significance of the number 40?
40
years. 40 days. 40 nights. Throughout the Bible, the number 40 has great
significance with respect to spiritual cleansing, breakthroughs, deeper
revelation, preparation for a new season and, or preparation for a fresh move
from God.
In
the New Testament, Jesus was tempted for 40 days and 40 nights (Matthew
4:2).
There were 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts
1:3).
In
the Old Testament account of the story of Noah’s Ark it rained for 40 days and
40 nights (Genesis 7:12).Moses was on Mount
Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights (Exodus 24:18).The Israelites
wandered for 40 years (Deuteronomy 8:2-5). When Elijah fled
from Jezebel, he traveled 40 days and 40 nights to Mt. Horeb (1
Kings 19:8).
So,
the number 40 is often connected to some sort of personal transformation as God
does a new thing in the lives of His people. Utilize this 40-day period that
you’ll be committing to do The Soul Fast as a very intentional time to prepare
yourself for a fresh move from God.
It’s
been said that it takes 30-days to change a habit, but it actually takes 40
days for the change to become second nature as part of our lifestyle. So, by
going on a 40-day fast, you begin to make regular prayer and time with God as
part of your daily routine.
