The enemy doesn’t show up with horns and a pitchfork—he comes with smooth talk, pressure, & appealing to our appetites

Let’s keep it 100%: when the serpent approached Eve in Genesis 3, he didn’t show up disguised as a lamb or a gentle dove. Eve knew she was dealing with a snake. 🐍👀

Yet so often, we find ourselves stuck in draining situationships, toxic “friendships,” or shady business arrangements asking: “Lord, how in the world did I end up here?”

If we get real with ourselves, the warning sign was present from day one. That quick check in your spirit—that split-second nudge of “Hmm, that was odd…”—wasn’t anxiety. It was the Holy Spirit handing you the cue to bob, weave, and step back! 🥊🛡️

In our kickoff session of Grown Folks in the Word, we went straight into Genesis 3:1–6 to look at today’s dating, mating, and relating dynamics through an unfiltered biblical lens.

Here are three major reasons we talk ourselves into trusting serpents—and how to guard your peace moving forward: ⬇️

1. The Trap of Word Salad & Over-Explaining

The serpent’s very first move was twisting what was already crystal clear: “Has God indeed said…?” Notice what Eve did: she stopped, entertained the conversation, and started explaining herself.

When someone is committed to misunderstanding you, the more you over-explain, the more ammunition you give them to manipulate you.

2. The Original FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) 🍎👀

The enemy didn’t just offer forbidden fruit; he framed God as withholding. He whispered that Eve was missing out on elevation, status, and inside knowledge.

Today, that same spirit whispers the same old lies:

  • “Nobody’s going to want you at your age—you better settle.” ⏳

  • “They got potential… you can be the one to fix and save them.” 🛠️

  • “If you walk away from this shortcut, you’ll miss your big opportunity.” 💼

Truth: God’s boundaries aren’t withholding your joy; they are protecting your destiny!

3. Choosing Chemistry Over Character 🔥

Everything that looks good isn’t good for you. When we get hypnotized by smooth charm and charismatic energy we end up ignoring character defects staring us right in the face. 🚩

What Downplaying Discernment Really Costs Us

Ignoring red flags doesn’t just cause unnecessary heartache—it causes spiritual deafness.

When we repeatedly override the Holy Spirit’s warning system, our spiritual sensitivity gets dull. We end up hiding behind modern-day “fig leaves” of shame, embarrassment, and confusion instead of running directly into God’s presence. 🍃
